The WLG Foundation
Mission Statement
MY HOUSE strives to do the following:
-
Provide a nurturing home environment for "Boarder Babies".
-
Develop a comprehensive service plan, which includes:
-
Child Development
-
Medical Care
-
Involvement of multi-disciplinary care providers from across the academic
community
-
Develop a model of care for border infants that can be replicated throughout
the state as an alternative to expensive and inappropriate hospital settings.
-
Develop a comprehensive volunteer program that serves as a nurturing agent for
the infants as well as a strong advocacy system for the children.
-
Increase the awareness on the part of the public and the involved systems of
the problems associated with these infants and the need for specialized
approaches in the development of solutions.
-
Assure the medical and development needs of these infants ate met.
The Problem
A serious problem exists among newborns...
Every day in Atlanta hospitals nursery beds sit filled with babies that do not
need to be there but have no where else to go. Abusive or drug addicted parents
often prevent these babies from returning home, and the hospital has to "board"
the babies until they can be placed in foster or adoptive homes.
The costs of this problem are two-fold:
-
the hospital and taxpayers have to pay the exorbitant costs of keeping babies
in hospital beds long past the time when they could be safely discharged;
-
the stunted development of the children, who now have to spend some part of
their formative years in the sterile environment of a hospital rather than a
warm, loving home.
What We Do
MY HOUSE's foremost objective is caring for children who have special medical
problems and do not have a family to care for them. At MY HOUSE, volunteers and
full-time staff members devote time and love towards the well being of these
homeless infants. Our mission is to provide a warm and loving home for these
children until permanency plans have been made.
MY HOUSE assures that all of the medical, developmental, and emotional needs of
the children are met round-the-clock by staff and volunteers from the
community.
My Name is Samuel
Hi, my name is Samuel. I want to tell you the story of how I came
to live at MY HOUSE.
I was born very early, weighing only two pounds. I lived in the intensive care
unit until I overcame my many medical problems. I lived in the hospital even
when the doctors said I had nowhere to go and my family could not care for me.
Then the people at MY HOUSE rescued me. They gave me a warm bed in a great big
house full of love. I have lots of friends at MY HOUSE who started out like I
did. We'll be dearly loved and cared for until a permanent home is found.
Please help me and my friends at MY HOUSE.
We're growing love!
